Where Your Life
is the Center of Our Care

Our History
Our Story

In 2021, during a time when the world faced an unprecedented mental health crisis, Dr. Sherry Nau and her partner Mark Fiorini felt called to be part of the solution. With a shared vision of increasing access to quality care, they brought together a group of passionate mental health advocates — and Gavia was born.

From those early days, Gavia has grown rapidly into a thriving community clinic with four locations and over 60 dedicated team members. Today, we are proud to be a New York State Office of Mental Health–licensed MHOTRS clinic, committed to providing comprehensive, compassionate care for individuals and families across our community.

From the beginning, Sherry and Mark built Gavia not only to serve clients, but also to create a workplace where clinicians could grow, feel supported, and deliver their best work.

In 2024, we experienced a great loss with Mark’s passing. His vision, warmth, and commitment to helping others continue to inspire everything we do. Every day, we honor his legacy by carrying forward the mission that he and Sherry began — to make mental health care accessible, effective, and grounded in humanity.

Our Founder, Dr. Sherry Nau
Dr. Nau holds a degree in Counseling and Education and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 25 years of substance abuse and mental health experience. While founding and establishing Gavia Lifecare Center, she made herself available to the team for consultation and supervision. Her primary responsibilities were maintaining connections with community providers, development of new referral sources, training and supervision of the Clinical Director, participation in clinical team meetings and ensuring the financial solvency of the company.

Mission Statement

Gavia is the name of the Genus for the Loon, a bird that is native to North America. Loons are the bird that holds it's breath the longest and dives the deepest. Our mission at Gavia LifeCare Center is to equip therapists and clients with the skills they need to hold their breath and take a deep dive to improve their quality of life on a daily basis.
